Chapter 50
Chapter 50:
Abbott entered the office with Dolores at his heels. Matthew was talking on the phone and motioned for them to be quiet as they entered.
Although Dolores anxiously wanted to know what had happened, she knew she had to wait for the moment.
Several minutes later, Matthew hung up the phone and gestured to Dolores. “Come here.”
Dolores walked over and stood in front of the desk, wiping her sweaty palms on her clothes.
“Can I have your phone?” said Matthew, extending his hand toward her.
“What?”
Dolores’ eyes widened, wasn’t she going to tell him what had happened? Why did she want his phone?
What the hell was going on?
Abbott stood silently by the window, looking up at the sky as he prayed in his heart, “God, Helen White, please come back as soon as possible. If you’re not here soon, I’m afraid Dolores Flores will take Mr. Nelson away.’
Matthew raised his eyebrows and asked in an unhappy tone. “You don’t want to give it to me?”
“No, no, sorry,” Dolores said, hastily pulling her phone out of her purse and handing it to Matthew. “It’s not password protected.”
Matthew took the phone and unlocked it. Then he opened the contacts and entered his phone number. Staring at the screen for a long moment, he jerkily moved his fingers to type “Mr. Nelson” in the name column. After all, Dolores always addressed him this way.” Then he dialed the number he had saved and the phone on his desk lit up and vibrated.
Dolores shifted her gaze between Abbott and Matthew, still trying to figure out what they were doing.
“What the hell just happened? Hey, say something.” Dolores hated being ignored.
Matthew handed the phone back to her. “This is so I can find you when I need to in the future.”
When she tried to contact Dolores that afternoon, she was shocked to discover that she didn’t have his phone number. What was worse was that he felt extremely and inexplicably unhappy to discover this.
Dolores didn’t pick up the phone. She stared at it as if she were interrogating:noveldrama
So Abbott was so anxious to find me, and it turns out it’s because Matthew wanted my phone number?
Matthew put the phone down on the desk and sighed heavily. “Please be ready.”
Before Dolores understood what Matthew was referring to, the large screen in front of her that Matthew used for video conferencing lit up and a high-definition video started immediately.
A pregnant woman was standing on the top floor of the Flores Group office building, looking like she wanted to jump.
Police vehicles, journalists and dozens of onlookers were below, creating a large crowd. Screams and cries of concern could be heard on the video. Dolores could feel the chaos of the scene through the screen.
She turned rigidly to look at Abbott. “What…what’s going on?”
“That woman bought a house from your father’s company. Of course, like many others, there was an accident during the construction of the building and the whole thing collapsed. Naturally, she doesn’t want the house anymore but, according to the contract, once you buy the house you can’t take it back. So now she’s on the top floor and plans to commit suicide, trying to force your father to pay her back.”
Dolores gasped and staggered back. “She… Is she really going to jump off the building?”
Even if money was imperative, life was far more important. Not to mention she was clearly pregnant. Her decisions weren’t just about her life anymore.
“Who knows? Maybe this is just an attempt to force your father to return the money. However, you also know what your father is like. If he pays you back, plus if the other buyers follow suit and use potential suicide to threaten you, you know he can’t raise enough money based on your company’s situation to pay it all back,” Abbott said coolly, making it clear it was none of his business.
Dolores wanted to do something but didn’t know what. “Is there anything we can do to help?”
Abbott looked at her coldly. “NO!”
The situation had deteriorated to its current state and the Flores Group was approaching the point of no return. No one would be willing to buy a building built by the company with chronic incidents of collapse. If the company did nothing soon to resolve the situation and repair its reputation, the Flores Group would have to announce bankruptcy and the judicial department would step in and auction off the company’s assets. It was a strong case.
“I have to go there, now,” Dolores said as she rushed out of the office.
Matthew frowned and got up to follow Dolores.
“Abbott, get some men.”
The scene would be a disaster, Matthew didn’t want Dolores to get hurt because of his haste and lack of preparation.
Before Abbott had a chance to respond, Matthew left the room. Abbott, who was the only one left, was confused and enraged by the whole scene that had unfolded in front of him. Was the person who left the office really the elegant and arrogant Matthew Nelson? He hadn’t cared that much about Helen White, had he?
Abbott became agitated at the thought that Dolores was not qualified to be Matthew’s mistress. He realized he had to warn Matthew and raise the situation with him in case something irreparable happened in the future.
Outside the WY Group office building, Dolores waited for a cab bouncing from foot to foot.
Matthew, who had retrieved his car, pulled up to the curb beside her. “Let me give you a ride.”
Dolores gave him a quick glance, then opened the door and climbed in without hesitation. “First we have to go to the bank.”
Dolores wished to withdraw her savings. She had originally intended to use the money to buy a house, but now she knew she had no choice but to use it to save the life of the woman and her baby.
“How many people do you think you can save? If this woman gets the money, more and more buyers are going to try the same thing. Can you afford it?” I couldn’t understand Dolores’ reasoning behind her thoughts.
There were cops on the scene. And, at least to Matthew, it didn’t look like the woman really intended to jump off the building. He supposed she was just using that approach to force Randolph to return the money.
“Is life less important than money in the eyes of businessmen like you? That woman is pregnant and if she dies, so will her child. This is all my father’s fault and, like it or not, I am his daughter…” Dolores shivered and curved her lips into a helpless smile. “I know I can’t save him. But I don’t want to be responsible for his sins either.”
Matthew fixed his eyes on Dolores’ cheek. In the end, she had a good heart toward Randolph.
Even though Randolph had abandoned and hurt her, she decided to help him. It was a senseless act, but Matthew was touched all the same.
“I’ll ask Abbott to take money over there.”
Matthew put the car in gear and pressed the Bluetooth button at the same time to call Abbott, asking him to bring about two hundred thousand to the scene.
Dolores hadn’t expected Matthew to be so willing to help. “Oh… Thank you. I’ll withdraw my money when we get back and pay you back.”
Matthew looked down the road ahead. “We’re already a couple, you don’t need to be so polite to me.”
Dolores turned to look at him, but he was good at hiding his emotions and she couldn’t tell anything from his expression. So she slowly turned away and refocused on the road.
Twenty minutes later, they arrived at the Flores Group. Although they were still a bit far from the place, Dolores could see a sea of people.
Matthew parked the car next to the curb.
“If you don’t pay me back, I’ll jump. I swear I will.”
The pregnant woman, standing on the edge of the roof, held a banner with “RETURN MY MONEY” written on it and came face to face with rescue personnel.
It was evident, even from the ground, that she was emotionally shattered. “I spent all the money my parents saved to buy this house. But now it turns out to be a defective building that does nothing but collapse. I’m not going to accept this any way! Give me back my hard-earned money! Give me my money back!”
As the pregnant woman shouted from the rooftop, people on the street joined in the protest.
The pregnant woman’s mother-in-law shouted at the entrance of the Flores Group, hoping to reach her daughter-in-law. “Even if the money is lost, we can always earn more.”
The woman loved her grandchild very much and her voice was breaking from crying so much.
However, the pregnant woman turned a deaf ear to her mother-in-law’s words. Relying on the presence of her unborn child, she was going to force Randolph to pay her back.
Dolores pushed her way through the crowd. Matthew frowned at the sight of her petite figure wandering through the crowd, but bit his tongue and followed her.
Matthew stepped forward and made way for her, almost as if protecting her.
Rescue personnel with a loudspeaker shouted to the woman. “Get down here first. This is all negotiable, even if it involves money.”
The place where the woman was was not suitable for the rescue personnel to try to keep her from hurting herself. Therefore, all they could do was to try to negotiate with her while others tried to find other means to rescue her.
Dolores approached the person holding the loudspeaker. “Can I try to talk to her?”
The rescue personnel didn’t dare hand the loudspeaker to a random person. Who would be responsible if a random person encouraged the pregnant woman to jump from the building?
“It’s useless to say anything else if you don’t return the money,” the woman said in a firm tone.
Since nothing had happened for more than two hours, the woman was drenched in sweat from the beating sun. But she still refused to give in.
“Please trust me. I won’t goad her.” pleaded Dolores.
The rescue personnel hesitated for a moment before handing Dolores the speakerphone.
Just as Dolores took the speaker to tell the woman she would give her money back, a scream pierced the air.
