Chapter 47
Chapter 47:noveldrama
“Mommy, let’s go.” Hayden came to as he watched the car drive away from the compound and coughed awkwardly.
On the way home, Stella took Hayden by the hand, looked at her mischievously, and said, “Mommy, did you gawk just now?”
“Who gawked?”. Hayden immediately denied, “Gawked? Impossible.”
“Then why did you stare at Joseph for so long after he left? Even I was uncomfortable.”
“Stella!” Hayden blushed and was speechless for a moment.
He suddenly thought about what Stella did when they got off the elevator. His expression changed and he grabbed Stella’s neck and said. “I didn’t arrange this with you, how can you just invite others into our home, did you even ask my permission?”.
Stella struggled and continued to fuss, “Mommy, let go of me, kindness begets kindness! That’s what the teacher said!”.
“…”. Whether it was because of the teacher or not, I had to teach her a lesson today.
The next day was Monday and Hayden met Joseph at the Kindergarten after school. Joseph picked up his son and was about to leave.
“I’ll take them back, he’s on his way.” A black car pulled up in front of a nondescript old pagoda tree. Hayden agreed, as it was difficult for them to hail a cab and the subway was some distance away.
Once they arrived, she politely thanked him, “Thank you, Mr. Beckham. If you weren’t always so busy, I would ask you to stay for dinner.”
The way she said it was so formal and polite that she was trying to hint to Joseph not to stay. But he intentionally ignored the hint, pretended he didn’t get it, and said, “I’m not busy at all. Besides, Noah told me he likes your cooking, he doesn’t eat well when he’s home. Come on.” She got out of the car after saying.
Hayden immediately regretted inviting them over for dinner, why had he said that, couldn’t he just keep his mouth shut?
Pushing aside his regrets, he drove Joseph and Noah home, then began preparing dinner with what was in the fridge.
“Please, I hope you don’t mind that it’s a small place.”
“It’s better than I imagined. Come, sit down and let’s eat together.” Joseph was serving the food for the two children and was acting familiar, as if he were in his own home.
Hayden felt strange after hearing what he said, took off her apron and sat across the table from him. The atmosphere was awkward and she tried to start a topic of conversation to improve the mood, “I heard from Mr. James that you often have dinner parties to attend.”
“Yes.”
“What about today?”
“Not tonight.”
“Ah.”
After a brief and meaningless conversation, Hayden decided to shut up and not speak. Joseph didn’t seem to want to continue the conversation, it was better for her not to speak to reduce the awkwardness.
There was silence for a moment before Stella began to talk about what had happened at school. Joseph also found it interesting and would occasionally join in the conversation. Noah would just nod or shake his head as the conversation progressed.
The atmosphere began to warm up.
After dinner, Joseph chatted with the two boys in the living room while Hayden did the dishes in the kitchen. It was close to nine o’clock when he finished.
“It’s late. I’ll take Noah home.” Joseph said getting up from the couch.
Hayden was startled and what she had prepared to say to urge them to leave was unnecessary now. She felt embarrassed to have had those thoughts, once she had escorted them out, she returned to being polite and formal, “Please forgive me if I have not been a good hostess. Come back in the future.”
Joseph took Noah’s hand and smiled, “Okay.”
Hayden’s heart sank and he felt Joseph didn’t get the hidden message of what she was saying. Would he take it at face value?
The next day, the black car stopped at the old pagoda tree again. They took an elevator and went back to dinner at her house. They ended up having dinner at her house three days in a row, Joseph had taken his son to dinner at her house and Hayden found it increasingly inappropriate. On Thursday, he intentionally avoided the old pagoda tree and took the subway home with Stella.
Joseph did not go home for dinner that night.
Hayden prepared two plates and soup for dinner. He said to Stella as he served her the food, “Come, eat this, it’s tasty.”
Stella was the same as before and didn’t feel any different because Joseph and Noah weren’t there. However, it was Hayden who felt somewhat empty inside. The house seemed quieter without the two of them, although they didn’t talk much.
The next day, after school was out, Hayden picked up Stella and was hesitating whether to walk past the old pagoda tree. But suddenly his phone rang.
It was Joseph.
“Mr. Beckham?”
“Are you picking up your daughter?”. The voice was strong and firm.
“Yes.”
“Can you pick up Noah for me? I’m kind of busy and can’t get out.”
“Oh?” Hayden was stunned and turned to look at the boys. Sure enough, she saw Noah waving briskly at her. He must have been trying to get her attention for a while now, as he was sweating profusely from waving at her.
“Sure, I will. Rest assured I’ll take good care of him.”
“Thanks, I’ll pick him up later.”
“Okay.”
She explained to the professor and picked Noah up, then headed for the car parked under the old pagoda tree. Joseph’s butler, Mark, drove them back to his house.
On the way, Mark looked in the rearview mirror and said, “Miss Downey, you have no idea how grateful the maids at the villa are for what you’re doing.”
“Why?” Hayden was perplexed.
“In the first place, the master frequently refused to eat his dinner. This made the master angry with the maids on countless occasions. Now that the master takes the young master to eat at his house, everyone is more relieved. Yesterday even the cook asked you if she could teach him how to prepare the dishes little Noah likes.”
Hayden was dumbfounded, “You bring Noah to my house because he refuses to eat?”
“Yes!” Mark looked puzzled. “What does Miss Downey think the motive was?”.
“Oh, I thought the same thing.” Hayden hastened to say, but his heart was restless.
It all started to make sense when she thought about Joseph saying last Saturday that he wanted her to be Noah’s nanny and that they were going to eat at his house these days.
She just wanted her son to eat better. She had thought too much about what had happened. She was glad she hadn’t been too obvious about what she thought, otherwise it would have been awkward.
When Joseph picked Noah up that night, Hayden said to him as they were leaving, “Mr. Beckham, you and Noah can come over for dinner anytime.”
Joseph remained indifferent as before and simply nodded, “Okay.”
Noah fell asleep in the child seat as they drove out of the apartment complex.
Mark was driving, looked in the rearview mirror and said, “Master, I have done as you ordered.”
